Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating

The holidays are around the corner, with all the celebrating that comes along with them. Whether you’re taking the plunge back into festive gatherings or just having a quiet holiday season at home, it’s important to stay on top of your holiday eating. Why? Because it’s easy to mindlessly eat everything laid before you during this time of year, which can mean significant weight gain over the holidays. Does this mean you can’t have any holiday treats? Certainly not! We’ve got some tips to help you successfully navigate the holiday eating season while maintaining healthy eating habits.

  • Be a little bit picky. There are foods at every holiday gathering, from the Halloween candy to the Thanksgiving meal to the Christmas cookies at the office party, that don’t actually appeal to you. While it’s ok to indulge in your favorites, acknowledging that not everything is your favorite can help you avoid overeating.
  • Take a breath before you refill your plate. After you’ve eaten, it takes a little while for your stomach to catch on that it’s full. Before you head back for seconds, spend ten minutes reconsidering. Drink some water, talk to someone you like, and think about something other than food. If you’re still hungry, go ahead and get a small portion of whatever you’re craving.
  • Practice mindful eating. Don’t just stand by the buffet table chatting and popping things in your mouth without thinking. Instead, decide what you’ll eat and take the time to savor it. Between meals, chew gum to keep yourself from eating whatever is on hand.
  • Stick to a schedule. It’s easy for schedules to go out the window during the holidays but eating regularly will help you stay satisfied and avoid binging because you’re too hungry. Before you head to a gathering where you know there will be tempting food, have a healthy snack to help curb your appetite.
  • Contribute something healthy. If you’re headed to a potluck, bring along a dish you can feel good about eating and sharing. That way, you know there will be something at the party that will fit into your healthy eating plan.
  • Consume alcohol wisely. It’s ok to have a small glass of eggnog or a holiday cocktail as long as you practice moderation. Never drink alcohol on an empty stomach, and drink water between alcoholic beverages.
  • Plan some fun instead of food. Why not go on a walk to see the holiday decorations, play a little ball in the backyard, or have a family dance party. Celebrations are more meaningful when they’re about more than just the meal.
